Abstract |
During the first decades of the twentieth century, a number of European immigrants in Montreal wrote in their native languages in various literary journals about specific features of Quebec society. Among them was the Romanian-born labour leader, refugee activist, and general-secretary of the Canadian Jewish Congress Hananian Meir Caiserman (1884-1950), who explored in Yiddish the poetry of the École littéraire de Montréal. To gain a better understanding of the cultural achievements of French Canada, Caiserman published his reflections in 1921 in a small Montreal literary journal, Nyuansn. The author argues that Caiserman's efforts throw a new light on Quebec society before the Quiet Revolution.
