La création du premier club de crosse francophone de Québec: Reflet des tensions ethniques?
|
Abstract |
Anglo-Quebecers founded to first organized lacrosse club (The Lacrosse Club of Montreal) in 1856, and Montrealer George William Beers drafted the rules for organized lacrosse in 1860. The game became so popular across the country that it became Canada's "national sport." The first Francophone lacrosse team (Quebec City's Le Club Champlain) was founded in 1868. That year, a series of four lacrosse matches were held in Quebec City between Le Club Champlain and one of the city's Anglophone teams, the Crescent Club. However, the matches had to be stopped because of the rowdy fans of each team who, according to the author, came from all social classes, unlike the players who were from the city's social elite. Afterwards, the players from the two teams met together at a banquet organized by Le Club Champlain. The author concludes that ethnic tensions vary according to social class.
