Title
From Monica With Love : Sketches of the Life of an English Quebecer in the early 20th century
Abstract
The author notes that her mother, Monica Philbrick Flannery (1898-1996), was born before the invention of television, cars and modern-day conveniences. Monica was the middle child of a family of five who grew-up in the Eastern Townships village of Danville. These sketches of Monica's life while growing up are based on her notes, letters and things that she told the author. Ahead of his time, Monica's father believed that women should be educated. He believed that every girl should have some way of earning a living should she have the need to do so. However, the author notes, the norms of the time limited Monica's choices. Although she wanted to be a nurse, at her father's insistence Monica instead went to Macdonald College, McGill University's Normal School, and became a teacher, but that career ended in 1923 when she married William Flannery. Despite this and life’s challenges, the author concludes, Monica remained a happy, cheerful person, a devoted wife and mother, and developed her creative and artistic talents.
