The Egyptians in Montreal: A New Colour in the Canadian Ethnic Mosaic
|
Abstract |
According to the author, Egyptian Montrealers constitute a small privileged group that accommodates linguistically and professionally to the city's bilingual institutions. She describes Egyptian women, even though they manifest a knowledge of local languages, as feeling isolated by other cultural factors. She maintains that ethnic institutions play a relatively minor role in the life of the city's Egyptian community. Finally, she argues that Egyptians are very stable in their sense of commitment to Canada at one level, and an accommodation to Montreal at another level.
