Title
L’éducation des enfants des groupes minoritaires au Québec. De la définition des problèmes par les groupes eux-mêmes à l’intervention de l’État
Abstract
The author examines the education of children of immigrant origins in Quebec in an historical and sociological perspective. The role of the different "problem definers" (i.e. Jewish children in a Catholic/Protestant schools system) is studied. The author argues that minority groups themselves and school boards have been the nearly sole problem definers before the 1960s. Since the end of the sixties, the Quebec state has intervened in a massive way within the framework of its policy aiming at defending the French language on the one hand, and of its intent to define a new society and a new state, on the other hand, by streaming immigrant children into French-language schools and away from English-language schools.
