Abstract |
The author found that the Irish Catholic associations and church in Quebec City in the second half of the nineteenth century developed a social network to help famine-Irish immigrants adapt to their new homeland and to establish their identity and preserve it in a predominantly Francophone city. The author's analysis of municipal and census directories from 1851 to 1900 allowed her to draw a portrait of the city's leaders of Irish associations and St. Patrick's Church, and to follow the evolution of these organizations according to the needs of the Irish community. Her analysis examines the factors that influenced these organizations and the prosopography of the members of their boards of directors. She discovered that an elite gradually took control of the organizational movement. This elite sought in the early days to manage the problems of immigration (health, housing, employment, alcohol, etc.), then to protect the image of respectability of the community and to meet its cultural and social needs, while maintaining the notion of an Irish identity.
