Le développement économique de Montréal et la Charte de la langue française
|
Abstract |
The author points out that according to the 1961 census data of the top 15 percent of Montreal's highest wage earners, 44 percent were Francophones and 56 percent were Anglophones. The 1971 census data showed that of the top 15 percent of wage earners, 57 percent were Francophones and 43 percent were Anglophones. In 1977, only 30 percent of the highest-paid workers were Anglophones compared with 70 for Francophones. He points out that this dramatic shift was not due to the Charter of the French Language (Bill 101), but to the improvement in the Francophone education system and to the decline in the economic importance of Montreal.
