The Irish in Mid-Nineteenth Century Canada and the Case of Quebec: Immigration and Settlement in a Catholic City
|
Abstract |
A study of the immigration and establishment of the Irish community in Quebec City in the mid-nineteenth century. The author points out that at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the immigrants came mostly from the north of Ireland and were for the most part Protestant farmers. However, from the mid-1830s onwards, the vast majority of Irish immigrants to Quebec City were Roman Catholic labourers from the south and west of Ireland. As the city's Irish Catholic population increased, its Irish Protestant population decreased. The author argues that language was not a major problem between the Irish Catholic community and the city's French-Canadians citizens because religious solidarity overrode their linguistic differences.
