Abstract |
A biography of the Morgan family, founders of the Henry Morgan & Co., Canada's oldest department store. The Scottish-born Henry Morgan (1819-1893) immigrated to Montreal in 1845 and opened a dry-goods store with David Starke Smith. When Smith retired in 1852 Morgan was joined by his brother James and the firm became Henry Morgan & Co. By 1874 the store employed 150 clerks, and in 1891 it moved to a new building on St. Catherine Street, turning this once residential street into Montreal's main shopping district. In 1960 the store was bought-out by the Hudson's Bay Company.
