Abstract
Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899) was a professor of geology and Principal of McGill University from 1855 to 1893. He is considered one of the founders of the science of palaeobotany for his work on fossil plants found in rocks of Devonian origin. He was also a vocal opponent of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
