Abstract |
The authors investigate the health beliefs of fifteen West Indian immigrants in Montreal with somatic, emotional or medically unexplained symptoms. Their aim was to elicit and explore illness narratives, explanatory models, symptom-attribution and help-seeking in the community. They highlight the importance of two related factors relating to the subjects' illnesses: chronic over-work since migration (long-hour, including overtime and moonlighting), and irregular patterns of daily living(sleeping, eating, family life).
