Abstract |
An analysis of ten portrait photographs taken at the Notman Photographic Studio of Montreal showing young girls reading. The author argues that William Notman intended to communicate to family, friends and to the girl in the photo herself the ideals of an effective upbringing was invariably associated with reading.
