Abstract |
An examination of the relationship of one song -- The Chapeau Boys -- to the community in which it was created. Chapeau, Quebec, is on Allumette Island in the Ottawa River. The song was written by Pat Gregg in 1884 and describes his life in an Ottawa Valley lumber camp. The Chapeau Boys is the most popular traditional song to come out of the Ottawa Valley.
