Abstract
The mid-nineteenth century law firm of Torrance-Morris was considered by contemporaries as the foremost exponent of commercial law in Canada and as the patriarch of the Montreal bar and business community. Its basic practice was service or management of a large portfolio of family business enterprises, and investments in the Montreal-based forwarding, retail, transportation and financial sectors.
