Dear Grace: A Romance of History
|
Abstract |
Based on 26 letters written by William Clow Little (1860-1911), a Canadian-born medical doctor living in Australia, to Octavia Grace Ritchie (1868-1948), a Montreal medical student, between 1889 and 1893. Ritchie was among the first class of women admitted to McGill University and was the valedictorian of her 1888 graduating class. She attended Bishop's College Medical School, graduating in 1891 as the first woman to receive a medical degree in Quebec. She was also the first woman to set up a private practise in the province. She campaigned for women's suffrage, legal reform and compulsory education, and was the first woman candidate fielded by the federal Liberal Party. She eventually married Frank Richardson England, M.D., in 1897.
