Abstract |
The first commercial daguerreotypists in Canada were two itinerant Americans, A.H. Halsey and Henry S. Sadd, who arrived in Lower Canada in 1840, offering their services first to the residents of Montreal and then to those of Quebec City. They only stayed for two months, complaining about the lack of sunlight for proper exposures. In 1841 a Mrs. Fletcher, "Professor and Teacher of the Photographic Arts", advertised her services in Montreal and Quebec City. Another early photographer was Thomas Coffin Doane (1814-1896), who ran a successful business in Montreal from 1847 to 1866.
