Title
The Fenian Raids, 1866-1870 - Missisquoi County
Abstract
Irish American Fenians, bent on capturing Canada in order to exchange it for the liberation of Ireland from British control, crossed over the Vermont-Canada border at Missisquoi twice in the nineteenth century -- in 1866 and again in 1870. At both times the Fenians were repelled. The site of the 1870 Battle at Eccles Hill in Missisquoi County between the local militia, known as the Red Sashes, and the Fenians was designated by the federal government as an Historic Monument in 1902, and a National Historic Site in 1923.
