Attitudes of Young Quebecers Towards English and French

Abstract |
A matched-guised study by the author investigated CEGEP-aged Quebecers' attitudes towards English and French and the speakers of those languages. A total of 414 participants in English and French CEGEPs rated the voices of four bilinguals (males and females) reading English and French texts in terms of fourteen traits (e.g. kindness, sense of humour, level of education). Participants from both ethno-linguistic groups consistently rated the English guises more favourably on almost all traits.
