Espaces ethniques et question linguistique au Québec : à propos des communautés italienne et portugaise
Abstract
The authors contend that the Italian and Portuguese communities in Quebec traditionally chose English as a vehicle of social promotion and resisted the imposition of French as the language of school instruction for their children. It is their view that these two communities chose to integrate with Quebec's English-speaking community and resist the imposition of French because of the difficult socio-economic conditions in their homelands that led to their emigration. The authors argue that the language conflict in Quebec, as well as the antagonism between French- and English-speaking Quebecers, allowed these two ethnic groups greater room to maneuver in the province than elsewhere in Canada.
