Title
The Dissentient School Problem in the Eastern Townships, 1841-1867
Abstract
The author examines the agitation for English Protestant school protection in Quebec prior to Confederation, with a particular exploration of the debate as it applied to and affected the Eastern Townships. He points out that in the writing of Canadian history, the debates surrounding Confederation and the ways in which prominent politicians in Quebec, such as Alexander Galt (1817-1893), lobbied for constitutional protections to Protestant schooling has been well documented. The author's study seeks to add to the existing literature by considering why constitutional protections were important to the English-speaking Protestants of the Eastern Townships. His analysis of the dissentient school laws in pre-Confederation Quebec is juxtaposed with a reading of extant newspapers from the Eastern Townships in order to shed light on the dissentient school question in the region and how the people of the Eastern Townships understood and participated in the debates surrounding the future of Protestant education in Quebec.
