Industry and Refuge: A Brief History of the Grace Dart Extended Care Centre, 1863-2013

Abstract |
Montreal's Grace Dart Extended Care Centre took root in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century as an undertaking by English-speaking merchants to eliminate poverty in Montreal by providing food, clothing and shelter to the city's poorest citizens. Today, it is a 350-bed public long-term care facility mainly serving the Anglophone community. Originally known as the Montreal Protestant House of Industry and Refuge when it was incorporated on May 12, 1863, and later renamed the Montreal Extended Care Centre, the provincial government in the 1980s forced its merger with the Grace Dart Hospital, originally founded as a TB hospital at the turn of the twentieth century, and became today's Grace Dart Extended Care Centre.
