Deaf and Dumb and Blind Deaf-Mutes, With Interesting Facts and Anecdotes; A Short History of the Mackay Institution...
Abstract
Montreal's Mackay Institution for Protestant Deaf Mutes was founded by the author in 1869. Thomas Widd (1839-1906) was a deaf-mute newspaper editor (the Montreal Witness) and pioneer of education for the deaf. Joseph Mackay, a Montreal businessman, erected a Gothic-style school for deaf-mutes on Décarie Blvd in 1877. In gratitude, the board of governors renamed the school after Mackay. Today the institution is part of the MAB-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre and Widd's role, until recently, was largely forgotten.
