Abstract |
The concept of "double majority" in the politics of the Province of Canada -- that legislation affecting either Canada East (Quebec) or Canada West (Ontario) could be carried only by a majority of the political representatives from that section of the province -- was a short-lived idea that evolved and disappeared in the mid-nineteenth century. The author outlines examples of English-French relations within Canada East, and also the opinions and attitudes of English-Speaking Tories towards the idea of "double majority" rule.
