Abstract |
Thomas Keefer (1821-1915) served as chief engineer of the Montreal Water Board. His 1852 proposal for the Montreal waterworks transformed the city's aspirations to profit from its situation on the St. Lawrence River for both water supply and waterpower into a technological reality. He also suggested that a tax be imposed to build canals, harbours, bridges and railroads that would re-establish Montreal's economic superiority over the rest of Canada and be able to economically compete with New York. Keefer was responsible for choosing the site for Montreal's Victoria Bridge. His design for the foundations of the bridge (“Keefer’s Shoes”) was used in the construction of the structure that some thought could not be built.
