Abstract
The author, the Honourable Mr. Justice Riddell, outlines the trial of American spy David McLane (c.1767-1797), executed in Quebec City for plotting on behalf of the government of revolutionary France to incite French Canadians to overthrow the colonial administration. McLane was hanged, beheaded, and had his bowels removed and burned. However, he was not quartered, as was also the custom for condemned traitors during that era.
