Montreal: A Mechanics' City

Abstract |
The author compares the objectives of the original Montreal Mechanics' Institute (MMI), founded in 1828, with the reorganized MMI in 1840. The original MMI was open to everyone, while membership in the reorganized MMI was more selective, and introduced a designated class system. The author points out that the original MMI was intended to serve the working class as a place to acquire "useful knowledge", while the reorganized MMI was more of a networking association catering to the wealthy businessmen of the city as first class members. Second and third class members were tradesmen and apprentices, which enabled the most talented to rub shoulders with influential people of the city. The author points out that the MMI Minute Books for 1853-1861 lists a growing number of third class memberships with traditional Irish names.
