Abstract
According to the author, rugby football was introduced into Canada by the officers of the regular troops stationed in Montreal. He notes that the first game of which there is any authentic account was played in Montreal in 1865 between the officers of the regiments stationed in the city and civilians, who were nearly all undergraduates or graduates of McGill College. Between 1876 and 1883, McGill and Harvard played annual matches, when the great divergence of rules (English vs American) made it difficult to continue the contests. He also points out that the differences in the rules between the Ontario and Quebec Rugby Unions for a long time hampered the playing of interprovincial matches.
