Abstract |
An economic assessment of Montreal in the mid-nineteenth century. The author, Thomas Coltrin Keefer (1821-1915), was chief engineer of the Montreal Water Board. Keefer suggested that a tax be imposed to build canals, harbours, bridges and railroads. The city would thus re-establish its economic superiority over the rest of Canada and be able to economically compete with New York.
