Plea for the Extension of University Education in Canada, and Especially in Connection with McGill University
Abstract
Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899) was Principal of McGill University from 1855 to 1893. This booklet contains his plea for aid and a critique of the federal government's decision to place the control of higher education under the jurisdiction of provincial governments under the 1867 British North America Act. Dawson points out the role McGill and the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning played in support of English language education in Quebec prior to Confederation, and the possible repercussions this might have on the university's relations with the provincial government in post-Confederation Quebec.
