Abstract |
An account of the jailing of Ralph Taylor (1773-1847), one of the two first members of the Legislative Assembly for the Eastern Townships riding of Missisquoi, for libeling the Speaker of the Assembly. In 1833 Taylor was charged with malicious libel against Speaker Louis-Joseph Papineau, for publishing a letter in the Quebec Mercury on March 9, 1833, accusing Papineau of denigrating his predominately American-descendant constituents in a speech in the Assembly. In his letter, Taylor wrote: "And I here beg leave to assure Mr. Speaker Papineau that personally there is perfect reciprocity between him and them - that they individually and collectively despise him and his principles and his politics, as heartily and sincerely as he can possibly those of the inhabitants of the townships." Taylor was jailed for 24 hours for libeling Papineau.
