| Abstract |
In the years just before and after Confederation, Irish American Fenians invaded Canada, hoping to capture the British colony and force Britain to grant independence to Ireland. In 1866 and again in 1870, the Fenians attacked Canada through Missisquoi County, in Quebec's Eastern Townships. The author outlines the history of the Fenian movement in the United States, and how both times the Fenians were driven back across the American border near St. Albans, Vermont. In 1866 the Fenians were driven back by the British Garrison stationed in Montreal and in 1870 by the local Missisquoi militia known as the Red Sashes.
