Abstract
The Irish-born William Evans (1786-1857) immigrated to Lower Canada in 1819 where he began to farm in Montreal at Côte-Saint-Paul. He was soon regarded as one of the most dynamic farmers in the Montreal region, with almost two-hundreds acres under crop and twenty-two head of cattle. From 1830 to 1847 he served as secretary-treasurer of the Agricultural Society of the District of Montreal; from 1847 to 1852 he performed the same duties in the Agricultural Society of Lower Canada; and in 1852 he became secretary-treasurer of the new Board of Agriculture of Lower Canada.
