George Ganetakos et la United Amusement Corporation, Limited, 1910-1930 : formation d’une chaîne de cinémas montréalaise
Abstract
An examination of the circumstances leading to the development in the 1920s of the United Amusement Corporation, a chain of Montreal movie theatres established by Greek-born George Ganetakos (c.1877-1955) that specialized in showing “second-run” films in theatres outside the downtown core. Ganetakos entered this developing entertainment business in 1912 when he opened the Strand theatre, Montreal’s first real movie palace. Ganetakos continued to expand his theatre chain throughout the 1910s and 20s. He built numerous luxury movie theatres in Montreal, including the Papineau, the Plaza and the Granada (today the Théâtre Denise-Pelletier). Famous Players took control of United Amusement in the 1959.
