'As well as men': The Gendering of Beaver Hall
|
Abstract |
The focus on the Beaver Hall Group since the 1960s has been primarily on the women painters of this 1920s Montreal-based assemblage of artists, even though men made up half of the group. However, as the author points out, the feminized nature of this discourse did not exist during the years that the Beaver Hall Group exhibited together in the 1920s. The author examines how and why the feminization of the Beaver Hall Group came about, and suggests what it might mean for the history of women and art in Canada to challenge this understanding.
