Abstract |
The author focuses on pages 5 to 48 of her thesis on the presence (both formal, by way of stylized punctual interjections, and thematic) of French in the English novel “The Girl Who was Saturday Night” (2014) by Montreal author Heather O'Neill. The author presents her analysis of three central characters' relationship to French: Étienne Tremblay, a Québécois chansonnier; Nouschka Tremblay, Étienne's daughter and the novel's narrator; and Adam, Nouschka's Anglophone boyfriend. The author contends that the complementary perspectives of these characters on the French language fuel a network of issues, values and conflicts related to Montreal identity. The author concludes that the use of French in O'Neill's novel provides an opportunity to reflect on its importance – its necessity, even – in the Montreal novel tradition, and to observe the dynamic at play between text and theme.
