Title
An Index of Retail Market Prices at Montreal, 1843-1867
Abstract
A reconstruction of retail market prices at Montreal in the post mid-nineteenth century for twenty-five commodities, separated into four groupings: meat, grain and flour, dairy, and fowls and game. The author found a nearly seventy-two percent increase in the retail prices over the twenty-five years studied, or better than a compounded two percent per annum increase. The reconstruction was done from prices listed in the Montreal Gazette, the Montreal Witness, the Montreal Herald and the Montreal Transcript. The two markets studied were St. Ann's (on Youville Square) and Bonsecours.
