Abstract |
Includes information on the role played by Doctor George Mellis Douglas (1809-1864), who was appointed medical superintendent of the quarantine station for the district of Gaspé in 1832 and served as superintendent of the quarantine station at Grosse Isle from 1836 to 1864. The Gaspé quarantine station was established following passage of legislation in September 1831 by Lower Canada's legislature as an attempt to curtail the world-wide pandemic of cholera, feared carried by Irish immigrants, from spreading in the colony. The health unit for the lower district of Gaspé was located in New Carlisle and the quarantine site for ships was in Paspébiac. Archival documents on the Gaspé quarantine station suggests that the health unit was in operation during the shipping season of 1832, and possibly also in 1833. More than 8,000 people died from the cholera epidemic of 1832 in Lower Canada alone.
