Abstract |
The personal memoir by Montreal-born Hugh Segal (1950-2023) who describes his early years growing up in the city "on the cheery edge of poverty." Segal describes the influence of his Jewish immigrant grandparents and his parents on his ideas about the struggles of ordinary folk, and his life-long advocacy for a universal basic income for Canadians. In 1962, Conservative Prime Minister John Diefenbaker visited the young Segal's United Talmud Torah Academy to speak about his Bill of Rights and the common duty of all citizens to serve their country. This talk inspired Segal to dedicate his life to public service and to Conservative Party politics. Segal was a senior aide to Ontario Progressive Conservative Premier Bill Davis in the 1970s and 1980s, and he was named a Deputy Minister at age 29. From 1992 to 1993, he was Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. In 2005, Segal was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin.
