| Abstract |
An examination of the main personalities surrounding the industrial and agricultural exhibitions in Montreal between 1880 and 1884, looking at the goals of these individuals and the means they employed to attain them. The author argues that these exhibitions can be viewed as a promotional tool for their organizers and promoters to put forward certain ideologies and identities. In Montreal, he points out, members of the local elites, predominantly Anglophone, used the exhibitions to promote progress and education, as well as the dominant role of Montreal elites within the public space and Montreal's metropolitan role within Canada
