Tackling Racism in Montreal's Education System: The NCC and the QBBE's Advocacy for Black Students
|
Abstract |
The author examines the role played by the Negro Community Centre (NCC) and the Quebec Board of Black Educators (QBBE) in combating racism in Anglophone Montreal schools in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Aside from petitioning the Quebec government to eliminate the white ethnocentricity in the school system, the NCC took an Afrocentric approach within its own youth programming to help develop Black pride and consciousness. The QBBE, which was formed to safeguard the interests of Anglophone Black youths in Quebec, fought for equal educational opportunities for Black students by running its own programming for Black students both within and outside of the education system. It also fought to rid the provincial curriculum of its racist content and to include more Black studies in schools.
