Fort-Coulonge : pour mieux connaître son histoire
Abstract
A bilingual history of an Ottawa Valley village, the center of the Bryson family timber enterprise. The Scottish-born George Bryson Sr. (1813-1900) moved to Fort Coulonge in 1835 where he began his career as a lumber baron. From 1855 to 1857 and from 1862 to 1867 he was mayor of the united townships of Mansfield and Pontefract (which included Fort-Coulonge until 1888). He was also postmaster at Fort-Coulonge by 1857–58, warden of Pontiac County in 1862 and 1863, and justice of the peace for the Ottawa District before 1863 and after 1867. In 1867 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of the province of Quebec for Inkerman Division. His son, George Bryson Jr. (1852-1937) took over the family timber business in 1887, as well as replaced his father on the Legislative Council. Another Bryson son, John Bryson, was mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract from 1882 to 1891 and Conservative Member of Parliament for Pontiac in the House of Commons from 1882 to 1896.
