Abstract
Donald Harvey MacVicar (1831-1902) was the first principal of the Presbyterian College in Montreal. Born in Scotland, MacVicar immigrated to Upper Canada (Ontario) with his parents as a child and was ordained into the Presbyterian Church of Canada (Free Church) in 1859. In 1861 he took up the position as minister at Montreal's Coté Street Church. The Presbyterian College was originally established as a bilingual theological college connected with McGill College to train ministers, particularly for work among French Canadian Roman Catholics. MacVicar also served as secretary of Montreal's Protestant Educational Association. The provincial government appointed him to the Protestant Board of School Commissioners in 1865, removed him in 1876, and reappointed him in 1878. He was chairman of the commission when he resigned in 1881, but the government reappointed him again in 1884 and he served as chairman for another 15 years before his death. The author, John H. MacVicar, was his son.
