Les figures juives dans le cinéma québécois : La recherche de soi dans le miroir de l’Autre
|
Abstract |
The author argues that until the late 1970s, Jewish characters in Quebec-made films embodied the figure of "the Other", the character who forced the "Quebec hero" to face the discomfort of his own identity. After 1980, Jewish characters in Quebec films begin to exist as themselves, no longer "the Other" but now full characters in their own right. The author examines eleven feature films and three short films: Le Chat dans le sac (Gilles Groulx, 1964), Le Viol d’une jeune fille douce (Gilles Carle, 1968), Réjeanne Padovani (Denys Arcand, 1973), The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (Ted Kotcheff, 1974), Joshua then and now (Ted Kotcheff, 1985), Anne Trister (Léa Pool, 1986), Jésus de Montréal (Denys Arcand, 1989), Shabbat Shalom (Michel Brault, 1992), La Position de l’escargot (Michka Saäl, 1998), Emporte-moi (Léa Pool, 1999) et Le Golem de Montréal (Isabelle Hayeur, 2004); and The Street (Caroline Leaf, 1976), Moïse (Howard Goldberg, 1991) and Rispondetemi (Léa Pool, 1992).
