Abstract |
A critical examination of the historiography on the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning and its attempts through the establishment of Protestant schools in Quebec to assimilate French Canadian Catholics. The author examines how the Royal Institution "confiscated" the proceeds of the controversial Jesuit Estates in the nineteenth century, and the role played by Quebec Premier Honoré Mercier in settling the matter in 1888 by dividing the money from the Estates between Protestant schools ($60,000) and the Catholic Church in Quebec ($400,000). The author is a member of the Jesuit religious order.
