Abstract |
The Scottish-born Duncan McNab McEachran (1841-1924) was the founder of the Montreal Veterinary School in 1866, the first veterinary school in Quebec. According to the author, the Montreal institution soon acquired a reputation as the best veterinary school in the world. In 1873, the school changed its name to the Montreal Veterinary College, attracting students from throughout North America. In 1877, the college opened a section for Francophone students and in 1885, one of McEachran's graduates opened the École de medicine vétérinaire de Montréal and another opened the École vétérinaire de Québec. In 1889, the college was incorporated into McGill University. McGill became the first university in North America to offer a degree in veterinary medicine.
