The Rationale for Moral and Religious Instruction in the Curriculum of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal

Abstract |
The author contends that the rationale for moral and religious instruction from 1960 to 1980, as it was given by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, was: 1) brief but valid in the eyes of the Provincial Government, the parents of students in the Board ,and the major Protestant denominations; and 2) incomplete. She was of the view that the Board neglected to completely develop some of the reasons it presented. She also states that it failed to mention all its reasons. Therefore, in order to understand why the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal offered moral and religious instruction, the author contends that it is necessary to know what the Board stated. She believes that it is also necessary to know what others had to say because their thoughts supported the Board, as well as showed where the Board's stated reasons could have been more fully developed. Finally, the author argues the Board failed to set forth all of its rationale and these unstated reasons could have been determined by referring to the opinions of others concerned with moral and religious instruction.
