| Abstract |
Describes two books by Montreal authors that departed from the prevailing norms of nineteenth century Anglophone Canadian literature. Maria Monk’s 1836 book (Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk) alleged that the nuns of Hôtel Dieu were forced to grant sexual favours to the priests of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Charlotte Führer’s 1881 book (Mysteries of Montreal) described the births of illegitimate children to socially respectable Montreal Anglophone women. The author argues that these books indicate that there was a level of life in nineteenth-century Montreal beyond that of the officially sanctioned moral standards.
