Éclairer et perfectionner l’esprit : l’éducation libérale et le délicat compromis entre raison et foi dans les écoles classiques de langue anglaise au Bas-Canada (1800-1840)
Abstract
The author notes that in the early nineteenth century, the influence of Protestant dogma was still pervasive in many English-language classical schools in Lower Canada. Educational contents were still infused with Christian morality and although most schools were non-denominational, the influence of the Anglican clergy was sometimes felt. However, the author points out, beyond a daily life marked by Christian conventions, it is true that the teachers of these institutions often shared a secular vision inherited from the Enlightenment. According to them, he explains, liberal education contributed to the historical progress of civilizations and to the improvement of individuals following the universal laws of nature. However, the author concludes, this rhetoric remained very close to Christian moral precepts, which it helped to reaffirm using a new naturalist vocabulary.
