George Allsopp: Quebec Merchant 1733-1805
|
Abstract |
Businessman, politician and seigneur, the British-born George Allsopp (1733-1805) was a vehement critic of the pro-Canadien and anti-mercantile policies of Quebec's first post-Conquest Governor, James Murray. Allsopp was a strong proponent for the implementation of the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and he later opposed the Quebec Act of 1774 because it provided for the exclusive use of French civil law in non-criminal cases and eliminated trial by jury in civil suits. Allsopp acquired the adjoining seigneuries of Auteuil and Jacques Cartier, upstream from Quebec, and used his grist mills on the Jacques Cartier River to specialize in the grain trade for local and overseas markets.
