The author explores the world of Canada's lesser-known literary efforts, works that suffered censorship, critical neglect, or brilliant yet fleeting notoriety. Covering more than 250 books, peppered with observations on the writing and publishing scenes, the author examines our cultural past, questioning why certain works are celebrated and others ignored. Includes works of fiction by English Quebecers or relating to English-speaking Quebec, including three of Brian Moore's pulp novels (written under the name Michael Bryan) that are set in Montreal; the works of Montreal-born Winnifred Eaton, (written under the name Onoto Watanna); Montrealer Ted Allan's "Love is a Long Shot" (written under the name Alice K. Doherty); Douglas Sanderson's Hot Freeze (written under the name Martin Brett); and Donna Steinberg's "I Lost It All in Montreal," which supposedly contains "the worst sex scene in all of Canadian literature."
